Paris erupts in chaos after Champions League final sparks unrest

Tensions flared across Paris on Saturday evening as celebrations for the Champions League final between PSG and Arsenal escalated into confrontations with police. The unrest erupted in multiple districts, drawing swift intervention from security forces tasked with maintaining order.

Security forces deploy as unrest spreads

The French Interior Minister conducted an on-site assessment along the Champs-Élysées before the match, reviewing the extensive security measures implemented by the Paris police. By late afternoon, the first arrests had already been recorded near the Parc des Princes, where the match was broadcast, and in the vicinity of the stadium.

Clashes intensify near iconic landmarks

The city’s most famous avenue became a focal point for disturbances. While the upper section remained closed, frustrated PSG supporters gathered at the lower end, streaming the match on their devices. Escalation followed as clashes broke out between rioters and law enforcement, resulting in broken infrastructure and multiple arrests. Reports also indicated the use of tear gas to disperse unruly crowds in the area.

In the 16th arrondissement, sporadic mortar fire was reported along Avenue Kléber, while in the 18th arrondissement, masked individuals brandishing iron bars were observed moving through the streets, though no immediate violence was recorded.

During the second half of the match, crowds surged toward Châtelet and the surrounding areas of the Parc des Princes. Police responded with tear gas to disperse the gatherings, restoring order after brief disturbances.

Arrests and seizures mark evening’s enforcement

By 7:30 PM, authorities had conducted 1,579 identity checks, issuing 64 fines. Twenty individuals were detained, with ten placed in custody. Authorities also seized 24 torches, two mortars, and confirmed the vandalism of a bus shelter on Avenue de la Boétie, near the Champs-Élysées.

Projectiles were launched at officers in the vicinity, where an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people had congregated during the match.

Near the Parc des Princes, approximately 150 individuals attempted to force entry through one of the stadium’s gates. A rapid police intervention successfully repelled the group, restoring calm within minutes.
