LOMÉ, 14 September 2026 — A leading figure in Togolese medicine and higher education has taken charge of West Africa’s health policies as of 1 September 2026. Professor Palokinam Pitché has been appointed president of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO). Selected as part of the renewal of ECOWAS governing bodies for the 2026-2030 term, this Togolese academic brings top-tier clinical and strategic expertise to the community institution.

The architect of the fight against HIV

For two decades, Palokinam Pitché has shaped the medical response to major epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa. His rise also rests on a proven ability to engage with major donors and international agencies. Moreover, by working closely with global health partners, Professor Pitché has structured complex health response programmes, building a reputation for administrative rigour and scientific effectiveness.

Towards ECOWAS health sovereignty

In taking the reins of WAHO, Palokinam Pitché inherits a demanding roadmap in a region facing resurgent epidemic crises and fragile healthcare infrastructure. His 2026-2030 mandate will therefore focus on several priorities: strengthening epidemiological surveillance, local drug production, and harmonising health policies among member states.

The appointment of this Togolese specialist signals ECOWAS’s desire to entrust its health diplomacy to highly technical profiles. By placing an accomplished scientist at the head of the body, the regional community is betting on pragmatic management capable of protecting more than 400 million citizens against tomorrow’s health emergencies.

In short, Professor Palokinam Pitché’s rise to lead WAHO goes beyond recognising an individual career. Above all, it embodies the hope of a West Africa capable of taking control of its health destiny. For the millions of ECOWAS citizens, this appointment opens the prospect of more effective protection against epidemic crises and enhanced access to quality care, the hallmarks of true regional health sovereignty.
