Speaking to a sea of mobilized supporters, the leader of the Pastef party expressed shock that longtime allies had abandoned the core principles pledged to the Senegalese people upon assuming power.

« This isn’t about individuals—it’s about betraying the promises we made, the pillars of our manifesto: transparency, accountable governance, justice reform, and fair resource management, » Sonko declared, outlining the foundational pillars that were meant to break away from past malpractices.

Institutional manipulation and erosion of democratic values

Sonko’s most provocative accusation centered on the alleged reorganization of the state apparatus under the current leadership. « Regrettably, the very system we sought to dismantle has reorganized itself in the palace to betray our vision and revert to familiar, damaging habits, » he asserted, warning of a return to the very practices his movement had vowed to eliminate.

He went further, questioning the legitimacy of a government that, in his view, lacks grassroots electoral support but commands state institutions. « In a democracy, sovereignty belongs to the people—not to institutions. Yet today, we see a government that clings to state machinery to compensate for its lack of popular mandate, » Sonko argued, signaling deep concerns over democratic erosion.

Judicial independence under threat, claims Sonko

Highlighting what he described as an orchestrated campaign to control key judicial bodies, Sonko alleged that maneuvers were underway to instrumentalize the Supreme Court and Constitutional Council. « These moves reveal the true nature of this system’s reorganization—six years after the promised alternance, » he stated, framing the allegations as evidence of a concerted effort to consolidate power beyond democratic accountability.
