Opposition leader masra remains imprisoned without medical care in Chad

For over a year, Chadian opposition leader Succès Masra, head of the Les Transformateurs party, has been held in detention under conditions that raise serious humanitarian concerns. His sister, Chancelle Masra, who now resides in France, has spoken out about his deteriorating health and the lack of proper medical attention available to him in Chad.

a year behind bars without dignity

Since his arrest, Succès Masra has been confined in a cramped military facility in N’Djaména, measuring less than 15 square meters. His detention conditions include prolonged isolation from natural light, an absence of basic amenities such as a bed, and no access to outdoor activities. These conditions have reportedly worsened his respiratory health, prompting medical experts to call for immediate specialized care—care that is not available in Chad.

denied communication and legal rights

The former Prime Minister, who finished second in the 2024 presidential election with 18% of the vote, has been cut off from all electronic communication. His personal devices, including phones and computers, were confiscated upon detention, leaving him unable to contact his family, including his daughter and wife. While family visits and lawyer consultations are permitted under restricted conditions, they require prior authorization each time.

Chancelle Masra has confirmed that her mother has been able to visit, but access remains tightly controlled. Despite international pressure, including statements from the European Union urging respect for judicial rights in Chad, no tangible progress has been made in improving his conditions or expediting his case.

legal battle and claims of injustice

In August 2025, Succès Masra was sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly inciting communal violence in southern Chad’s Logone Occidental region. However, his legal team and family vehemently deny the charges, calling the conviction baseless and politically motivated.

They point out that Succès Masra has consistently advocated for peaceful dialogue since founding his party in 2018. He even signed a peace and dialogue agreement with the government in 2023 and served as Prime Minister without accepting a salary, donating his entire earnings to national development. His commitment to nonviolence and national progress, his supporters argue, makes his imprisonment not only unjust but counterproductive to resolving Chad’s political tensions.

An appeal has been filed, but no hearing date has been set. The prolonged detention of an individual without credible evidence or witness testimony has fueled accusations of judicial misuse to silence political opponents.

regional tensions and shrinking democratic space

The case of Succès Masra is not isolated. Recent weeks have seen eight opposition figures from the GCAP alliance sentenced to eight years in prison for organizing peaceful marches, further tightening the space for political expression in Chad. These developments have raised alarms among human rights advocates and regional observers about the state of democracy and governance in the country.

Chancelle Masra, a geopolitics enthusiast, views the situation with deep concern. She emphasizes that true democracy requires the ability of opposition voices to be heard without fear of imprisonment. While the Chadian government asserts that opposition representation exists within legislative bodies, Chancelle Masra counters that legal representation does not equate to genuine freedom of expression.

international solidarity and calls for justice

Despite the challenges, Chancelle Masra expresses gratitude for the growing international solidarity surrounding her brother’s case. Influential figures across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the United States, as well as organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have publicly supported his cause. She believes this global support has been instrumental in keeping him alive.

While she enjoys freedom of expression in France, she laments that many others in Africa—and particularly in Chad—are denied this fundamental right. She urges global leaders to uphold human rights and reject the use of judicial systems to silence peaceful dissent, especially under the pretext of national security.

a legacy of resilience and hope

Despite internal party defections—such as the former vice president Sitack Yombatina becoming a government minister and Moustapha Masri taking a role in the presidential secretariat—Succès Masra remains a symbol of hope for many Chadians. His call for national unity, development, and security resonates widely, with supporters worldwide, including the diaspora, continuing to rally behind his vision for a stronger Chad.

As diplomatic channels between Chad and international partners, including France, have reopened, Chancelle Masra calls on all stakeholders to prioritize justice and human rights. She warns against sacrificing fundamental freedoms in the name of counterterrorism, stressing that protecting innocent lives and upholding democratic values must remain paramount.
