OGC Nice failed to secure a victory against bottom-placed FC Metz, drawing 0-0. Ultimately, this result, combined with wins for Auxerre and Le Havre, means the Gym must now face relegation playoffs to retain their spot in Ligue 1.
While the draw against Metz might not seem significant in isolation, it proved costly for Nice. The Aiglons were unable to defeat the league’s last-place team at home, a result that could have directly impacted their Ligue 1 future. Unexpectedly, Auxerre, who were level on points with Nice before the match, managed a 2-0 away win against LOSC in Lille. Similarly, Le Havre, also battling for survival, triumphed 2-0 at Lorient.
Consequently, Nice will now have to fight for their Ligue 1 status through two crucial playoff matches against Saint-Étienne. These decisive encounters are scheduled for May 26 and 29. This challenge comes just days after their Coupe de France final clash against Lens, set for this Friday at the Stade de France.
Next up for OGC Nice: the Coupe de France final against Lens this Friday, May 22, at 9 PM.
