Niger: thousands displaced by terror attacks in the south-west
Hundreds have fled their homes following mid-July terror strikes on villages in south-western Niger, regional officials confirm.
These displacements mark an unprecedented crisis in the Dosso region (south-west), bordering Nigeria and Benin. The exodus began during critical farming season after terror groups launched coordinated strikes in mid-July on villages in Loga, a department within Dosso.
Initial assaults on July 17 targeted at least three settlements, leaving dozens of civilians dead and injured. Local authorities describe these as deliberate terror acts with no formal casualty reports released yet. Government sources consistently label the attackers as terrorists, a term used for jihadist factions linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State operating in the country.
Survivors have sought refuge in Tahoua, a nearby region bordering Nigeria, while hundreds more have converged on Dogondoutchi, a major town approximately 100 km from Loga, as shown in state television footage.
United Nations data indicates Niger housed over 450,000 internally displaced persons in 2025, primarily concentrated in conflict-ridden areas: Tillabéri (west), Diffa (south-east), and Tahoua (central-east).
The tri-border zone linking Benin, Niger, and Nigeria has witnessed a sharp rise in jihadist violence in 2025, with Al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates establishing a lasting foothold, according to conflict tracking by ACLED.
