Niger crisis: democratic party advocates peaceful dialogue over military intervention

The ongoing political turmoil in Niger and the looming threat of military action by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against the country’s coup leaders have drawn sharp criticism from Les Démocrates, a prominent opposition party in Benin.

In an official statement released on Saturday, August 5, 2023, party leader Eric Houndété expressed deep concern over the military takeover in Niger, describing it as a crisis that not only destabilizes the neighboring country but also emboldens opportunists who exploit regional instability for personal gain.

The opposition party unequivocally condemns any unconstitutional seizure of power, emphasizing that the resurgence of coups across West Africa stems from systemic issues such as political injustice, economic deprivation, and institutional corruption. According to Houndété, these crises thrive in environments marked by authoritarian rule, suppressed freedoms, and manipulated electoral processes—factors that perpetuate instability and hinder democratic progress.

ECOWAS urged to prioritize diplomacy over confrontation

Les Démocrates has called on ECOWAS member states to reject military intervention and instead embrace dialogue as the primary means of resolving the Niger crisis. The party advocates for preventive measures to address the root causes of coups, including constitutional manipulation, poor governance, and social exclusion.

Highlighting legal and ethical concerns, the Beninese opposition questioned the legitimacy of declaring war on a fellow ECOWAS member state without proper parliamentary oversight. Houndété raised critical questions: “Which legal framework justifies military aggression against Niger? Who will bear the financial burden of such an operation, and what safeguards exist to protect the lives of our citizens?”

A plea for regional stability and shared prosperity

Rather than endorsing a risky and unpredictable path of force, Les Démocrates urges the Beninese government to champion dialogue, negotiation, and reconciliation. The party argues that fostering peace in Niger is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic move to safeguard mutual interests between Benin and its neighbor.

In conclusion, Les Démocrates reiterates its commitment to initiating a national political dialogue as a vital tool for promoting peace and sustainable development in the region.
