Motards du Faso complete 3 000 km regional tour to promote road safety

A team of twenty motorcyclists from the Motards du Faso concluded their ambitious Grand Tour Régional 2026 on August 11th in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Their ten-day journey covered nearly 3,000 kilometers through Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, blending adventure with a strong advocacy mission for road safety.

Upon their triumphant return to the capital, the group was greeted by a festive crowd, celebrating their safe arrival after navigating diverse terrains and cultures. The opening leg of the expedition set an immediate challenge: a grueling 23-hour ride from Ouagadougou to Accra, Ghana, departing at 4:30 AM and arriving at 3:30 AM the following day—including brief stops.

Unity and advocacy at the heart of the journey

The Motards du Faso framed their expedition as more than a sporting feat; it was a gesture of solidarity and awareness. Speaking to the press, Abel Aziz Konaté, the group’s president, emphasized their commitment to fostering connections with fellow motorcyclists across West Africa.

« This regional tour is part of our long-standing tradition of engagement. It builds on the success of the 72 Heures des Motards du Burkina, our 2025 event, where we brought together riders from across the continent. We wanted to extend our greetings and strengthen bonds with our peers in the countries we visited, » Konaté explained.

The riders, decked in branded helmets and jackets atop gleaming motorcycles, traversed borders with a message: every road user deserves protection. Their tour was punctuated by cultural exchanges and heartfelt interactions with local communities, all while championing the mandatory wearing of helmets.

Promoting helmet use: a cultural shift over strict enforcement

Konaté, a vocal advocate for road safety, reiterated the group’s stance on helmet usage. « We fully support the Ministry of Security’s efforts to make helmet-wearing universal. Enforcement should never be the only path to safety—it must become second nature for all riders and passengers, » he declared.

The expedition didn’t just highlight the beauty of West African hospitality; it also underscored the Motards du Faso’s dedication to turning road safety into a shared cultural value. From bustling cities to remote villages, their presence sparked conversations and, ultimately, change.
