Morocco secures key nuclear energy role in African Union
The appointment of a Commissioner for the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) is a highly strategic position within the African Union. This role involves overseeing the implementation of the Pelindaba Treaty, which aims to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Africa. The responsibilities of this position are both technical and diplomatic in nature.
Morocco has been unanimously elected as Commissioner of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) for a three-year term. This landmark decision was made during the 7th Conference of States Parties to the Treaty on a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in Africa, held at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.
The election reflects the confidence the African Union places in Morocco, aligning with the Kingdom’s longstanding commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development. This trust is rooted in Morocco’s proactive role as a regional leader in leveraging peaceful nuclear technology to address critical socio-economic challenges, particularly in healthcare and agriculture.
Under the leadership of Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the Moroccan delegation includes experts from the National Centre for Nuclear Energy, Sciences and Techniques (CNESTEN) and the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR).
Morocco’s strategic vision for nuclear energy
Morocco’s election to this prestigious commission underscores its dedication to advancing nuclear safety and security across the continent. The country has emerged as a hub for the peaceful use of nuclear technology, addressing pressing issues such as water scarcity and food security.
The AFCONE Commissioner’s role is pivotal in ensuring the continent’s adherence to the Pelindaba Treaty, which prohibits the development, production, or acquisition of nuclear weapons in Africa. This position demands a blend of technical expertise, diplomatic finesse, and unwavering commitment to regional stability.
Strengthening Africa’s nuclear future
Morocco’s appointment comes at a crucial time, as the continent seeks to harness nuclear technology for socio-economic growth while maintaining strict non-proliferation standards. The Kingdom’s active participation in this conference, held in a hybrid format, demonstrates its proactive stance in shaping Africa’s nuclear energy landscape.
By championing the peaceful application of nuclear technology, Morocco is poised to play a transformative role in advancing Africa’s development agenda. This election not only highlights Morocco’s diplomatic prowess but also reinforces its position as a key player in fostering a secure and prosperous future for the continent.
