The Moroccan people will soon travel on the newly named Donald Trump Highway. King Mohammed VI announced on August 1st that the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway would bear the name of the former U.S. president, in recognition of his pivotal role in supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020.
Honoring a Historic Diplomatic Breakthrough
In a gesture of deep appreciation, the Monarch stated, “The recognition of our sovereignty over Western Sahara by President Trump is a historic milestone that will forever be etched in the hearts of Moroccans.” He continued, “In tribute to this act of friendship and peace, I have decided to rename one of the kingdom’s most vital road infrastructures, the Donald Trump Highway.”
The 1,055-kilometer highway, spanning from Tiznit to Dakhla, is now the longest road infrastructure in Africa, as highlighted by the King. This landmark decision follows the United States’ unprecedented shift in policy in December 2020, when Donald Trump formally endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara in exchange for the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel.
Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony rich in phosphate reserves and abundant marine resources, remains a disputed territory. While Morocco controls much of the region, the United Nations continues to classify it as a non-self-governing territory.

In a reciprocal message marking the 27th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne, Donald Trump reaffirmed his unwavering support for Morocco’s proposal for Western Sahara. The move underscores the strengthening ties between the two nations, built on mutual respect and strategic alignment.
The newly christened highway stands as a symbol of enduring partnership, reflecting both nations’ commitment to progress and stability in the region.
