Between June 23 and June 29, the Malian military successfully secured the passage of 940 civilian supply vehicles traveling toward Bamako. This massive operation spanned the critical Kayes-Sandari-Diéma-Bamako route, ensuring the safe arrival of essential goods.
The mission initially involved 540 trucks moving from Kayes to Sandari. Upon reaching Diéma, the convoy was bolstered by additional military units. During the journey, several vehicles that had been stranded along the road were integrated into the group, bringing the final count to 940 trucks before the final leg to the capital.
Despite the complexities of the route, the entire fleet reached Bamako without any significant security breaches. The convoy navigated through several key towns along this essential transit line, maintaining a steady pace to ensure the safety of the drivers and their cargo.
This military intervention comes at a time when road safety has become a growing concern and Bamako faces ongoing challenges with fuel distribution. The presence of the armed forces provided the necessary protection to bypass potential threats that have recently hindered commercial traffic.
The Kayes-Bamako axis serves as a lifeline for the nation, connecting the capital to western regions and providing access to trade routes from Sénégal and Mauritanie. It is the primary artery for importing fuel, food supplies, industrial equipment, and various consumer goods destined for local markets.
