Mali’s Mohammed VI vocational hub: boosting skills for national development

Spanning an impressive 5,200 m² of covered space, the Mohammed VI Vocational Training Center in Bamako is set to revolutionize skill development across Mali. This state-of-the-art facility delivers professional training programs meticulously designed to meet the evolving demands of the Malian employment market, fostering essential competencies for the nation’s economic and social advancement.

Mamary Diarra, the National Director of Tourism, emphasized the profound significance of this initiative, stating, “I must first commend the outstanding partnership between the States of Mali and Morocco. This generous gift from His Majesty Mohammed VI stands as a testament to the deep understanding and friendship shared by our two nations.” Diarra highlighted the center’s role in equipping young Malians with vital skills right here in Bamako, noting its comprehensive amenities, which include modern classrooms, fully equipped mock restaurants, and simulated hotel environments. He proudly declared it “a remarkable acquisition for the Malian State.”

Once fully operational, this significant infrastructure is poised to welcome nearly 1,000 trainees annually. The curriculum encompasses 21 distinct training pathways, with 12 specialized in the building and public works (BTP) sector, and another 9 dedicated to the thriving fields of tourism, hospitality, and catering. This broad range of offerings is crucial for addressing key sectors of the Malian economy.

Mamadou Minkoro Traoré, President of the Permanent Assembly of Malian Chambers of Trades (APCMM), underscored the immense value of having such a vocational training center within the country. He noted, “This facility provides the opportunity to train our youth locally. Previously, trainees often had to travel to Morocco for similar education. Beyond delivering high-quality instruction, this establishment significantly reduces the costs associated with travel and accommodation for these students.” This represents a major step forward for African current affairs and local skill development.

Mamadou Traoré, a fashion designer trained in haute couture and styling in Morocco and promoter of Balimaya, highlighted Mali’s urgent need for skilled human resources in critical development sectors. “The center’s launch is incredibly timely,” he remarked. “I extend my gratitude to the Moroccan authorities for entrusting this center to Mali. It will empower young Malians to acquire valuable trades, deterring them from risky ventures abroad and actively contributing to the fight against youth unemployment.”

During the official handover of this impressive facility to Malian authorities last July, Oumou Sall Seck, Mali’s Minister of National Entrepreneurship, Employment and Vocational Training, emphasized that this initiative directly addresses a strategic imperative for Mali. It aims to bolster skill development and strengthen human capital in sectors vital for the nation’s sustained economic and social growth, showcasing strong African governance in action.
