Abidjan welcomes Guinea’s elite forces with standing ovation

Abidjan was the stage for an unforgettable display of military precision last Friday, August 7, as 150 Guinean special forces soldiers marched in formation, rifles in hand, clad in full camouflage gear. The unit’s commander led the procession, proudly unfurling the red-yellow-green national flag as the distinctive “Pas de caméléon” drill echoed through the parade ground.

The Guinean contingent concluded the foreign military parade during Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th independence anniversary celebrations. The precision drill drew thunderous applause from the official stands and the crowd, with spectators rising to their feet in admiration. Broadcast nationwide and trending across social platforms, the performance captured the attention of journalists, influencers and citizens alike.

Crowd reactions: a display that won hearts

Social media erupted with praise following the parade. Deloy Dadié, an Ivorian observer, shared his enthusiasm: “As an Ivorian, I must say this was the best parade I’ve ever seen. I watched it repeatedly in calm and even downloaded the footage. Thank you, Guinea.”

Brice Kouadio echoed the sentiment, calling the performance “imposing, powerful, fierce and elegant—this year’s standout moment.”

Constant Silué went further, comparing the Guinean special forces to Côte d’Ivoire’s own military units: “I loved the Guinean parade more than our own. It’s the first time I’ve seen their special forces in action—it’s magnificent. Thank you, Guinea. You are sincere and true neighbors.”

Back in Guinea, the images sparked national pride. Bory Diallo remarked, “The subregion is taking notice of Guinea’s armed forces.”

Ibrahima Bah emphasized the symbolic significance of the event: “Strong neighborly relations matter. With a large Guinean community living in Côte d’Ivoire, seeing our military march in Abidjan fills us with pride—especially for those of us who call this beautiful country home.”

Sekou Moriba shared a similar sentiment: “Despite everything, watching them march fills our hearts with a deep sense of pride.”

This wasn’t the first time the Guinean special forces stole the spotlight. Since their striking debut during Guinea’s independence day parade on October 2, 2018, the unit has steadily earned a reputation as one of the country’s most impressive military formations.
