Mali strikes jihadist network with drone strike on key JNIM commander
The Malian Armed Forces have confirmed the elimination of a high-ranking jihadist operative tied to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) during a targeted drone operation. This significant development follows the announcement of unprecedented financial incentives for the capture of armed group leaders.

The Malian military command disclosed Sunday that the operation, conducted on June 3 in the Mougnan area near Djenné in central Mali, resulted in the death of the targeted commander. Identified by multiple aliases including Oumar Kéréna, Farouk, and Housseini Mawdo, the militant had transitioned from the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa to become a pivotal figure within Mali’s jihadist landscape.
From regional fighter to network coordinator
Military intelligence reports indicate the slain operative previously served in the Serma zone before overseeing armed operations across Sikasso, Koutiala, and sections of neighboring Burkina Faso. His role allegedly involved coordinating multiple JNIM-affiliated cells, making him a linchpin in the coalition’s Sahel operations.
Bamako intensifies counterterrorism measures
This announcement coincides with Mali’s implementation of sweeping new security measures. On June 4, authorities announced a landmark financial reward system offering up to two billion West African CFA francs for actionable intelligence leading to the capture or elimination of terrorist leaders. The most substantial bounty targets the country’s most-wanted individual: Iyad Ag Ghali.
The strike represents a critical escalation in Bamako’s sustained campaign against jihadist networks, occurring amid heightened security threats across Mali and the broader Sahel region.
