Mali faces worsening security crisis after deadly Bandiagara attacks

In a swift response to recent violence in central Mali, a high-level government delegation led by Ismaël Wagué, the Minister of State for Reconciliation, Peace and National Cohesion, arrived in Bandiagara on Monday, May 11, 2026. The mission followed a brutal terrorist assault on the villages of Kori-Kori and Gomossogou in the Bankass district, which occurred just five days prior.

The delegation conveyed the government’s deepest sympathies to affected communities during an official ceremony at the regional governor’s office. As part of the relief effort, authorities distributed critical supplies including 25 tons of millet, 25 tons of rice, and a financial aid package totaling 20 million FCFA to support recovery.

While the attack has been attributed to fighters from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), authorities have yet to release an official death toll. However, local dozos militia leaders, including Youssouf Toloba, head of Dana Ambassagou, reported over 60 fatalities, numerous injuries, and severe property damage. Toloba claimed the assault was retaliation after villages refused to sign peace agreements with armed groups.

Noël Tessougué, deputy chief of the dozos, warned that the militia would no longer tolerate villages that had struck deals with JNIM fighters. Addressing the crowd, Minister Wagué reaffirmed the transitional government’s commitment to ending civilian-targeted violence nationwide. He concluded with a call for unity, solidarity, and collective action to address the country’s pressing security challenges.
