At least ten civilians, primarily young men, lost their lives in Mali on Sunday due to drone strikes conducted by the national armed forces. The tragedy unfolded in the small town of Téné, nestled in the San region of central Mali, as preparations were underway for a traditional communal marriage ceremony. Local and security sources confirmed the grim toll, highlighting the devastating impact of the operation.
These strikes occurred against a backdrop of escalating insecurity across the country, exacerbated by coordinated assaults on April 25 and 26. Militant factions, including the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and the predominantly Tuareg Azauad Liberation Front (FLA), were responsible for the large-scale attacks that have further destabilized the region.
The incident has intensified concerns about the collateral damage caused by military counterterrorism operations in Mali. While the government has not yet issued an official statement, the loss of civilian lives has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater accountability in the use of drone technology for security operations.
