Mali army regains control in key conflict zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared that they have reclaimed strategic control across all embattled regions targeted by attacks from the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the north and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, operating in central and southern Mali.

In a recent official statement, the FAMA confirmed ongoing clashes on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location situated approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The confrontation followed the arrival of additional personnel and military supplies for the MNLA, prompting a robust response from Malian troops.

The army’s communiqué emphasized that its soldiers demonstrated unwavering determination and resilience throughout the day. It highlighted their disciplined approach and courageous efforts in sustaining the offensive against hostile forces. The statement concluded with a strong reaffirmation of confidence in the FAMA’s ability to safeguard national unity, protect civilians, and decisively defeat enemy combatants.

Meanwhile, a representative of the MNLA, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted reports of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, asserting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations in northern Mali.
