In a breathtaking turnaround, Racing Club de Strasbourg-Alsace overturned a 4-1 deficit to secure a dramatic 5-4 victory over AS Monaco in Ligue 1’s matchday 34 on Sunday evening.
The eighth-placed visitors faced a seventh-placed opponent, but Monaco immediately asserted dominance, controlling possession with ease while Strasbourg struggled to maintain rhythm. Mike Penders, the home goalkeeper, remained alert but his distribution was erratic. It was Lamine Camara who broke the deadlock in the 9th minute, intercepting a lax pass from Samir El Bourabet and slotting home to silence the stadium. The visitors doubled their lead just before halftime when Martial Godo’s long clearance found Julio Enciso, who combined with Penders’ weak backpass to beat Lukas Hradecky at close range. Camara added a third minutes later, capitalizing on a loose touch to fire past the Austrian goalkeeper. Monégasques midfielder Maghnes Akliouche pulled one back before the break, but Ansu Fati restored a two-goal cushion with a thunderous strike from distance. Christian Mawissa nearly extended the lead in stoppage time, only for the crossbar to deny him.
a second-half spectacle turns the tide
The visitors returned for the second stanza with a sense of complacency, aware that Marseille’s win over Rennes had already secured sixth place. Strasbourg, however, roared back with renewed intensity. In the 56th minute, Ismaël Doukouré inadvertently diverted a fierce cross from Folarin Balogun into his own net. Diego Moreira then took over, embarking on a mazy run down the right flank before unleashing a rocket from the edge of the box that crashed into the top corner. The Belgian international, playing with flair, electrified the crowd and inspired his teammates. Three minutes later, Moreira found Sebastian Nanasi on the left edge of the penalty area. The Swede evaded Denis Zakaria and Wout Faes with ease before drilling the ball low into the far corner. Monaco, now visibly shaken, conceded again in the 72nd minute when Godo’s cross was headed back across goal by Enciso, allowing Nanasi to pounce and level the score.
Fueled by their passionate supporters, Strasbourg pressed for a winner. Monaco, in disarray, crumbled in the 84th minute when Enciso embarked on a solo charge from deep, rounded Penders, and curled a sublime shot into the far post. The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations in the stands, as the Alsace faithful witnessed one of the most unforgettable comebacks of the season.
