Le Mans FC’s promotion to Ligue 1 is now official following the Professional Football League’s disciplinary committee upholding the club’s 2-0 victory over Bastia.
The club from the Sarthe region will return to the top flight of French football after 16 years away, following their second-place finish in Ligue 2.
On Saturday, May 9, the Sang et Or secured a crucial 2-0 win against SC Bastia in the final matchday of the season. However, the match was interrupted by smoke bombs thrown onto the pitch in stoppage time. While referee Ruddy Buquet indicated the game would not resume, he never blew the final whistle.
This left the outcome in the hands of the disciplinary committee, who were tasked with validating the result and determining sanctions for Bastia’s supporters, whose actions led to the match’s suspension.
The committee ultimately confirmed Le Mans FC’s victory, paving the way for their historic promotion.
Bastia faces sanctions of two matches behind closed doors and one suspended match.
