Lansana Gagny Sakho clarifies his stance on Ousmane Sonko and republican institutions

The president of the APIX board, Lansana Gagny Sakho, recently shared his perspective on his evolving relationship with Ousmane Sonko, shedding light on his unwavering commitment to republican values. During an interview, he recounted his initial alignment with Pastef’s political vision, driven by the individuals behind it, only to later distance himself after witnessing actions that conflicted with his principles.

Speaking candidly, Sakho revealed that he declined a high-profile appointment in the water and sanitation sector to uphold his ideals. “I prioritized my convictions over positions of power,” he stated. “This allowed me to walk away without hesitation. From the start, I chose the Republic.”

Disagreements rooted in governance and institutional integrity

In stark contrast, Sakho criticized Sonko for failing to embrace republican governance. He pointed to public remarks made by Sonko during President Faye’s official visits to the United States and China, where he publicly questioned the government’s authority. Sakho argued that such statements undermined national cohesion and embarrassed the administration.

Advocating for institutional strength and reform

For Sakho, the essence of political leadership lies in strengthening institutions and enhancing state efficiency. While acknowledging challenges faced by both sides, he highlighted significant progress, particularly in judicial reforms. He recalled the resignation of the former Minister of Justice, Ousmane Diagne, whose assertion that he could not be manipulated was, in Sakho’s view, a misguided attempt to influence the judiciary. “Magistrates are not puppets,” he emphasized, stressing that the realities of governance differ vastly from opposition rhetoric.

His remarks come amid a wave of defections from Pastef, with several party members aligning themselves with President Faye ahead of the upcoming launch of the Kiiraay party. Sakho has consistently voiced his support for Diomaye Faye’s policies, emphasizing the importance of institutional continuity and stability.
