Interpol operations in Benin target fugitives sought internationally

In an intensified crackdown on transnational organized crime, Benin’s Republican Police has stepped up cross-border operations to dismantle criminal networks and apprehend fugitives exploiting international loopholes. The mission is unequivocal: ensure Benin does not become a safe haven for individuals fleeing justice abroad. Between April 13 and 19, 2026, the BCN-INTERPOL Cotonou unit executed a series of synchronized raids, successfully ending the escape of three fugitives actively sought by multiple nations.

Operation success: three fugitives intercepted in Cotonou

On April 15, a high-profile arrest was made when Nigerian national, wanted by Lagos authorities for alleged involvement in multiple homicides between 2023 and 2024, was detained in a Cotonou hotel. The suspect had been widely publicized by Lagos State Police, making his capture a priority in regional security efforts.

The same day, another operation led to the arrest at Cotonou’s Bernardin Gantin International Airport of a fraud suspect sought by U.S. authorities. The individual had fled the United States in haste, attempting to enter Benin to evade prosecution in a major financial crime case.

Days later, on April 19, a French national—also wanted for alleged ties to transnational organized crime—was apprehended in Cotonou. Authorities revealed he had constructed multiple false identities to evade detection. However, persistent and discreet surveillance by specialized police units over several weeks ultimately led to his identification and capture.

Legal proceedings and international cooperation

Following their arrests, the Nigerian fugitive was handed over to his home country’s authorities under the ECOWAS Police Criminal Cooperation Agreement. Meanwhile, extradition processes for the remaining suspects are currently underway, reflecting Benin’s commitment to upholding global justice standards and preventing safe havens for criminals.

Benin’s stance against transnational crime

Through these targeted interventions and subsequent extraditions, the Republican Police has reaffirmed its dedication to combating transnational organized crime. The agency underscores its commitment to international police collaboration and its unwavering stance against allowing any sanctuary for international offenders, regardless of nationality or the nature of their alleged crimes.
