French national detained in Senegal over alleged homosexuality

A French national, an engineer in his thirties, has been held in detention in Senegal since his arrest on February 14. He faces charges including “acts against nature” and “attempted transmission of HIV.” This arrest highlights a broader context in Senegal, where penalties for homosexual relations have been significantly toughened.

The French national was apprehended on February 14, 2026, amid a wave of arrests. The accusations against him include “acts against nature,” “association of criminals,” “money laundering,” and “attempted transmission of HIV.” He is identified as a Dakar-based engineer in his thirties.

Officials at the French embassy in Dakar are closely tracking the situation of their compatriot. Consular representatives have conducted four visits to him, ensuring consular protection, and maintain regular contact with his family. The Quai d’Orsay services in Paris are also actively involved.

Senegal’s crackdown on alleged homosexuality

In early March, Senegal, a predominantly Muslim nation, passed new legislation that now mandates prison sentences ranging from five to ten years for homosexual relations. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye formally promulgated this law on March 31.

This legislative development occurs amidst a growing climate of homophobia within the country and a series of arrests targeting individuals for suspected homosexuality. In Senegal, same-sex relationships are largely considered a deviation, and the increased severity of their repression has been a consistent and politically resonant commitment from the ruling party.

France reiterates its fundamental commitment to the universal and indivisible nature of human rights. The nation also emphasizes its dedication to the global decriminalization of homosexuality, the defense of LGBT+ individuals’ rights, and the vigorous fight against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
