French footballer Elye Wahi questioned by police over match fixing claims

Days before departing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, French-Ivorian striker Elye Wahi found himself at the center of a match-fixing investigation in Ligue 1, leading to a police interview in France. The incident has raised questions about his participation in the global tournament.

What triggered the investigation into Elye Wahi?

French authorities questioned Elye Wahi on May 29, shortly after his club, OGC Nice, secured their Ligue 1 survival in a crucial playoff match. The investigation stems from suspicious betting patterns reported by betting analysts, who flagged unusual wagers on Elye Wahi receiving a yellow card during Nice’s 0-0 draw against Metz on May 17.

The match, which saw Wahi receive a late tackle foul in the 35th minute—his fifth yellow card of the season—was followed by a dramatic shift in circumstances. Just ten days later, Wahi played a pivotal role in Nice’s 4-1 playoff victory over Saint-Étienne, scoring twice and earning Man of the Match honors. His performance ensured Nice’s promotion to Ligue 1, but it also coincided with a police operation targeting match-fixing allegations.

Legal proceedings and Wahi’s World Cup participation

The Marseille Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the arrest, stating that a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player was detained in connection with an investigation into organized fraud, sports corruption, money laundering, and concealment. While the prosecutor did not name the player, sources identified him as Elye Wahi—a former French youth international who now represents Côte d’Ivoire in international competitions.

Wahi was released after questioning, with no formal charges filed at this stage. This allowed him to travel to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he made his debut for the Elephants in a 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Playing as a starter, he combined well with teammate Yan Diomande, who was named Man of the Match, before hitting the crossbar in the first half.

FIFA’s stance and Wahi’s future in the tournament

As of now, no official statement has been issued by FIFA regarding whether Wahi’s involvement in the investigation could affect his eligibility to play or travel during the World Cup. The Ivorian striker is expected to feature again in the team’s next match against Germany in Toronto on June 20.

With the investigation still ongoing, the outcome remains uncertain. For now, Elye Wahi continues his World Cup campaign, but the shadow of the match-fixing probe looms large over his participation in one of football’s biggest stages.
