The legal battle has taken a new turn in Dakar, with descendants of Serigne Touba taking decisive action against a prominent political figure. A formal complaint was filed on July 14, 2026, and officially registered the following day at the Tribunal de grande instance hors classe in Dakar. The lawsuit was initiated by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, who allege that remarks made by Ousmane Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s new headquarters crossed a legal and moral line.
The plaintiffs challenge Sonko’s claim that “dirty money” entered Touba, the holy city founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. They argue that such statements not only tarnish the reputation of the city but also dishonor its residents and undermine the religious values upon which it was built. In their submission, the complainants emphasize that Touba stands as a symbol of faith, integrity, and unwavering devotion, and they insist that any allegations to the contrary are baseless and damaging.
Demanding accountability and evidence
The collective behind the lawsuit is not mincing words. They are calling for an immediate police investigation to clarify Sonko’s remarks and verify any supporting evidence. The plaintiffs have made it clear they are prepared to assist investigators with video recordings, written transcripts, and press clippings to strengthen their case. If the inquiry confirms that Sonko’s statements were unfounded, they are urging prosecutors to pursue charges of defamation and spreading false information under the Senegalese Penal Code.
A case unfolding in a politically charged climate
This legal confrontation arrives at a time of heightened political tension in Senegal. The relationship between the central government and religious leaders in Touba remains a delicate issue, particularly regarding financial transparency and public statements. The prosecutor’s office in Dakar now faces the task of assessing the validity of the complaint and determining the next steps in an affair that has already sparked significant debate within the Mouride community.
