Chile-Maroc reaffirment of support for UNSC resolution on Western Sahara

The Chilean president’s statement was echoed by her counterpart, Mohammed VI, who reiterated Morocco’s commitment to the autonomy plan.

María Catalina Del Real Mihovilovic, chair of the Chile-Morocco parliamentary friendship group, reaffirmed her country’s support for UNSC resolution 2797 on Western Sahara during a visit to Rabat. The resolution aims to establish an autonomy plan as a ‘serious and sustainable solution’ to the conflict.

Del Real Mihovilovic highlighted the potential for economic complementarity between Chile and Morocco, particularly in the agricultural sector. She noted that Chile relies heavily on Moroccan phosphate imports for its agriculture industry, which is a significant contributor to the country’s economy.

The visit coincided with the 65th anniversary of Chile-Morocco diplomatic relations as well as the 22nd anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s visit to Chile. Del Real Mihovilovic emphasized that her country’s foreign policy is based on a ‘state policy’ and that its friendship with Morocco transcends political affiliations.

During the meeting, Del Real Mihovilovic expressed her appreciation for Morocco’s commitment to the autonomy plan and the potential for cooperation in areas such as water management, technology, and tourism. She also welcomed Morocco’s efforts to promote economic development in Western Sahara.
