The Chadian air force launched a swift and forceful response following recent “devastating nocturnal assaults” by jihadist groups. These attacks, which targeted the Barka Tolorom military base on May 4th, tragically claimed the lives of 25 individuals, including two generals, and left 46 wounded. In retaliation, Chadian fighter jets have been observed striking islands within Lake Chad, specifically those suspected of being under Boko Haram control and situated near the shared borders of Nigeria, Niger, and Chad. Reports indicate that these aerial bombardments specifically targeted Shuwa island, a location identified as both a significant jihadist stronghold and a bustling fishing hub frequently utilized by Nigerian fishermen.
These military operations have led to deeply concerning developments. A representative from the Lake Chad fishermen’s union has stated that at least 40 Nigerian fishermen are now unaccounted for and are feared to have drowned during the intensive bombing campaigns. Many of these presumed victims reportedly hailed from Doron Baga, a town located on the Nigerian side of the lake, which tragically endured a mass killing event claiming 2,000 lives in 2015.
At present, the Nigerian press has remained silent on these allegations originating from its neighboring country. This silence comes amidst ongoing scrutiny, as Nigeria’s own national army frequently faces accusations of inadvertently striking civilians, with the most recent controversy involving civilian casualties just weeks ago.
