Canary Islands parliament commends Moroccan consulate’s impact

Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, formally recognized Fatiha El Kamouri’s four-year tenure as Morocco’s consul in the archipelago, highlighting the strengthened institutional ties between Morocco and the Canary Islands.

Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, met on Wednesday with Fatiha El Kamouri, Morocco’s outgoing consul general to the Canary Islands, marking the conclusion of her four-year mission to strengthen institutional relations between the archipelago and the Kingdom of Morocco.

During the meeting, Pérez expressed her gratitude for El Kamouri’s dedicated service, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation between the two institutions. She also wished the consul success in her future professional endeavors.

Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving for six years as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in fostering institutional ties and supporting the Moroccan community residing in the islands.

Observers in the Canary Islands emphasize the profound and positive impact El Kamouri’s leadership had on deepening the strong relations between the regional government—led by Fernando Clavijo—and Morocco.

By reaffirming unconditional support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara, Clavijo aligns the Canary Islands with Spain’s national diplomacy. This stance reflects a strategic understanding of security priorities, regional stability, and substantial economic and trade opportunities.

The institutional rapprochement demonstrates that the Canary Islands are now viewed as a natural partner in Morocco’s development, rejecting past attempts to create divisions across the two shores.

The collaboration spans key strategic sectors, including water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological research—areas where the Canary Islands’ expertise has found valuable applications in southern Morocco.

Businesses in both regions have intensified contacts to advance joint projects, illustrating how mutual interests form the foundation for enduring peace and shared prosperity—a legacy significantly shaped by Consul Fatiha El Kamouri’s efforts over recent years.
