As the newly elected leader of Benin’s inaugural Senate mandate for 2026-2031, Patrice Talon delivered his inauguration address this Thursday, marking a historic moment for the nation’s political landscape.

Unity and collective responsibility at the forefront

In his address to the Senate’s eldest member and fellow senators, Talon expressed deep appreciation for the trust placed in the elected leadership and its deputy rapporteur. He highlighted the harmonious atmosphere that characterized the institution’s establishment, emphasizing the importance of building a true community-driven dynamic within the Senate.

Talon called for collective responsibility, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to the country’s higher interests. He underscored that teamwork, consensus-building, and a spirit of camaraderie should take precedence over any divergences to ensure the institution’s smooth operation.

Addressing past criticisms and looking ahead

The new Senate president acknowledged criticisms of having allegedly weakened national unity during his two presidential terms. However, he made it clear that his new role would focus on strengthening national cohesion, political stability, peace, and democracy in Benin. Talon invited his colleagues to actively uphold this shared ambition.

Leadership team for the historic mandate

The Senate’s first-ever elected president will lead this groundbreaking mandate alongside Louis Vlavonou, former National Assembly president and now elected as Senate vice-president. Alassane Seidou and Adidjatou Mathys have been appointed as rapporteur and deputy rapporteur, respectively, forming a leadership team poised to guide the institution through its initial term.
