Bénin’s president Wadagni kicks off diplomatic tour in Nigeria

Just a week after taking office, Beninese President Romuald Wadagni embarked on his first official international trip to Nigeria, the West African giant and Benin’s leading trade partner. On June 1, 2026, he landed in Lagos, where he was welcomed by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a private meeting covering key strategic topics.

strengthening economic and security ties

The one-on-one discussions between the two leaders focused on deepening economic and industrial integration, boosting energy cooperation, and reinforcing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. They also addressed regional stability and the future trajectory of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), highlighting the shared vision for regional development.

The choice of Nigeria as the first stop underscores the priority Benin places on its relationship with its eastern neighbor, often affectionately called “the giant to the east” by Beninese citizens. This visit symbolizes a renewed commitment to bilateral cooperation following years of strained ties, including the border closure between 2019 and 2020 that disrupted trade flows.

trade and connectivity driving bilateral relations

With over 800 kilometers of shared border and diplomatic ties dating back to 1961, Benin and Nigeria maintain deep multidimensional relations, especially in trade. The Port of Cotonou serves as a vital gateway for Nigerian goods destined for landlocked countries in the subregion. In 2024 alone, formal Beninese exports to Nigeria surged by more than 90%, reflecting the growing economic interdependence between the two nations.

This visit follows a period of intensified efforts by both governments to restore and strengthen bilateral ties. Since the reopening of the border, authorities in Cotonou and Abuja have launched multiple initiatives aimed at facilitating smoother exchanges and fostering closer collaboration across sectors.

a broader diplomatic agenda

Following his engagements in Lagos, President Wadagni continued his regional tour, traveling to Niamey, Niger, on June 2, before heading to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. These stops are seen as symbolic gestures to reaffirm Benin’s commitment to rebuilding trust and cooperation with its inland neighbors, where relations have cooled in recent years.

The Beninese president’s itinerary reflects a clear strategy: prioritizing Benin’s strategic partnerships in West Africa to enhance regional stability, economic resilience, and collective security.
