The diplomatic trajectory of Bénin is set to reach a pivotal moment on the continental stage. Come September 2026, the country will assume the rotational presidency of the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the entire month. Final preparations for this leadership role were deliberated in Addis-Abeba, where Bénin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Corinne Amori Brunet, met with the AU Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, during the 49th session of the Executive Council.

A significant milestone in a two-year mandate

This monthly presidency is part of Bénin’s broader two-year term (2026-2028) secured within the PSC on February 11. Seven months after its election as one of the 15 decision-making members of this body, Cotonou now takes the helm of an institution pivotal to monitoring, preventing, and resolving crises across Africa.

While the rotational presidency does not grant unilateral decision-making authority, it positions the host nation at the heart of continental diplomacy:

• Agenda-setting power: Bénin will shape the month’s session agendas and prioritize the themes for in-depth discussion.
• Spotlight on urgent cases: The country will steer deliberations on pressing regional tensions, including the Sahel crisis, the Sudan conflict, and instability in the Horn of Africa.
• Institutional coordination: Cotonou will oversee engagements with other AU structures, such as the Panel of the Wise and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
