Babacar bâ challenges ousmane sonko’s stance on political funds in Senegal

Babacar Bâ, who presides over the Forum du justiciable, has once again voiced strong criticism, highlighting what he perceives as a glaring inconsistency in the public statements of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko regarding the transparency of political funding. Speaking publicly, the human rights advocate underscored that Sonko, now a prominent figure championing integrity and robust African governance, himself managed a political fund exceeding 1.7 billion CFA francs during his tenure at the Primature, a sum Sonko had previously confirmed publicly.

According to Babacar Bâ, the situation presents an almost unbearable irony. The current leader of Pastef had, in the past, frequently condemned what he termed the state’s “black funds.” Yet, upon assuming office, he found himself overseeing the very mechanisms he had previously criticized. The coordinator of the Forum du justiciable has consistently made the issue of political funds a central battleground in recent months, repeatedly demanding that the Presidency, Primature, and National Assembly disclose the amounts received and submit to scrutiny by the Cour des comptes (Court of Accounts).

The President of the FJ characterizes the current state of governance in Senegal as an institutional charade. He has issued a fervent appeal to the Senegalese populace, urging them to awaken, unite, and reclaim their destiny, a message delivered with a passionate tone that contrasts with the typically technical nature of his past interventions on public financial management. This development is certainly a key piece of African current affairs.
