Aminata Touré challenges Ousmane Sonko’s political stance with republican values

In the heart of Mékhé Village, within the Méouane commune, a major political gathering drew local leaders and elected officials this past weekend under the leadership of Aminata Touré, Supervising General of the Kiiraay/Les Patriotes Républicains party.

At the event, Aminata Touré delivered a speech laced with political undertones. While avoiding direct references to Ousmane Sonko, the Supervising General of Kiiraay/Les Patriotes Républicains underscored the fundamental importance of republican values, institutional respect, and the sanctity of the press and judiciary. Her remarks come at a time when relations between the two prominent figures in Senegalese politics remain strained by deep ideological divides.

Defining the true republican patriot

In a carefully crafted address, Aminata Touré outlined her vision of what constitutes genuine patriotism, one that transcends mere political allegiance. She argued that true love for the nation must be accompanied by unwavering respect for the rule of law, democratic institutions, and the freedom of the press and justice system. Her words appeared to subtly address practices she considers incompatible with these principles, without explicitly naming any individual.

This declaration follows a period of heightened political tensions in Senegal, particularly concerning the relationship between power, institutions, and media freedom. By placing republican integrity at the center of her discourse, Mimi Touré appears to draw a clear line between those who, in her view, prioritize political combat over the foundational tenets of republican governance.

The president’s leadership under the spotlight

Aminata Touré went further, urging Senegalese citizens to rally behind the president’s agenda. She framed the mobilization in Mékhé Village as a testament to public support for the head of state’s vision and his commitment to steering the country toward sustainable development.

According to her, the president remains « fully dedicated » to this mission around the clock. For Kiiraay/Les Patriotes Républicains, the priority is to drive socio-economic transformation, with a particular focus on empowering youth and women. The party’s leadership has announced plans to replicate such mobilizations nationwide, with party officials set to engage in grassroots campaigns to solidify the foundations of the new presidential formation.

Local leaders echo the call for unity

Cheikh Tidiane Sall, Mayor of Méouane, also weighed in, urging Senegalese citizens who value peace, democracy, and social progress to stand behind the president’s initiatives. His appeal aligned with Aminata Touré’s vision, emphasizing the need for national cohesion and collective advancement.
