Algeria and Niger boost hydrocarbon collaboration for regional energy integration

Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of Hydrocarbons, recently held a virtual meeting with Hamadou Tini, the Minister of Petroleum for the Republic of Niger. Their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation within the critical hydrocarbon sector, marking a significant step forward for both nations.

The high-level talks, attended by senior officials from both Algerian and Nigerien ministries, provided an opportunity to review Sonatrach’s recent activities in Niger. Particular attention was given to operations at the Kafra oil block. This ongoing collaboration follows the signing of a pivotal Algeria-Niger memorandum of understanding on hydrocarbon development, which took place on March 24, 2026. The signing occurred on the sidelines of the 2nd session of the Algeria-Niger Joint Cooperation Commission, co-chaired by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Lamine Zeine.

Further into their dialogue, the ministers assessed the progress of development and exploration efforts at the Kafra block. They also monitored the coordination levels between Sonatrach, operating through its subsidiary Sonatrach International Production and Exploration Corporation (SIPEX), and the Nigerien Petroleum Company (SONIDEP).

During the session, both parties underscored the importance of actively involving Nigerien enterprises and companies in energy projects. This strategic inclusion aims to promote local content and significantly bolster economic development across Niger.

The meeting also explored avenues for deepening cooperation in key areas such as training, technology transfer, and the exchange of valuable expertise. Plans include organizing targeted training programs for executives and technicians, alongside fostering partnerships between national companies from both countries, including Sonatrach, SONIDEP, and Naftal. Specific areas for enhanced collaboration encompass the transport, storage, distribution, and critical security of petroleum product supply chains.

Concluding their productive exchange, the two ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to continuously strengthen bilateral cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector. They expressed a firm resolve to implement all agreed-upon projects, ultimately serving economic development and promoting robust energy integration between Algeria and Niger.
