The first leg of the Bundesliga promotion playoff ended without a winner on Thursday evening. Wolfsburg, currently 16th in the German top flight, were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Paderborn, who sit third in the 2.Bundesliga. Despite dominating much of the game, the Wolves must now travel to face the Second Division side next Monday to secure their top-flight status.

Just days after clinching their playoff spot with a crucial 3-1 victory over Sankt Pauli, Wolfsburg faced a must-win scenario at home. Paderborn, buoyed by their recent 2-0 triumph over Darmstadt and Hannover’s 3-3 draw with Nuremberg, arrived in high spirits. However, neither side managed to break the deadlock, leaving the tie delicately poised for the return fixture.

Paderborn started brightly

The visitors came out aggressively, pressing high and forcing Wolfsburg’s keeper Kamil Grabara into a string of impressive saves, including a spectacular double stop from a corner. Yet after surviving that early scare, the hosts gradually wrestled control of the match under the influence of their captain, Christian Eriksen.

Wolfsburg dominate but lack cutting edge

With 63% possession and 15 shots on target, Wolfsburg were clearly the better side but failed to convert their dominance into goals. Paderborn’s resilient defense, bolstered by a red card to Jonah Sticker in added time, ensured the score remained unchanged. The frustration was palpable for the Bundesliga strugglers, who now face an uphill battle in the return leg.
