WHO’s Vital Backing for Health NGOs in Mali amid Severe Crisis

The World Health Organization (WHO) has led the coordination of health sector partners in Mali since 2012. By 2025, Mali faces a critical humanitarian emergency, with 6.4 million people—nearly 28% of its population—requiring urgent aid. Shockingly, the humanitarian response plan is only 8.5% funded, with a mere 6% allocated to health, severely restricting the ability of aid organizations to address pressing medical needs.

To tackle this gap, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) allocated a second reserve fund for Mali, specifically targeting internally displaced persons affected by armed violence and insecurity in regions like Gao, Mopti, and Ségou. Health assistance was prioritized for funding due to WHO’s advocacy, backed by compelling evidence highlighting the dire lack of access to essential healthcare among vulnerable populations.
