unesco in Mali joins launch of 27th environment fortnight in Bamako
The UNESCO office in Mali proudly participated in the official launch ceremony of the 27th Environment Fortnight, which took place in Bamako on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The Organization’s delegation was led by its esteemed Representative, Mr. Ali Mohamed Sinane.
The opening ceremony, a significant event in African current affairs, was presided over by Mr. Alousséni Sanou, the Minister of State, Minister of Economy and Finance, who represented the Prime Minister, Head of Government. This high-profile gathering brought together numerous government members, environment ministers from the countries of the AES Confederation (Burkina Faso and Niger), alongside representatives from national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society organizations, the private sector, and various media outlets, underscoring the collaborative spirit for African governance.
The central aim of this 27th Environment Fortnight is to consolidate national initiatives, thereby strengthening community awareness regarding the preservation of Mali’s vital natural resources and fostering the adoption of sustainable environmental practices.
Scheduled to run from June 5 to June 15, 2026, the fortnight will focus on two critical themes:
“The climate crisis and solutions for a safer, more resilient, and more sustainable future,” directly aligning with World Environment Day objectives;
“Pastures: recognize, respect, restore,” referencing the International Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
Through its active involvement, UNESCO reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the Government of Mali. This dedication translates into bolstering environmental awareness, championing sound ecological practices, and supporting the execution of tangible actions that contribute to sustainable and resilient development across the nation.
