Togo’s anc rejects proposed constitutional changes amid political maneuver concerns

The Alliance Nationale pour le Changement (ANC) has voiced strong objections to recent discussions hinting at a fresh political dialogue concerning a potential revision of the Togolese Constitution. In a public statement issued on May 28, 2026, the party, under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Fabre, condemned these overtures as a deliberate political diversion. The ANC firmly reiterated its stance against any process it deems lacking broad national consensus.

According to the ANC, reports indicating forthcoming talks to once again alter the constitutional text raise significant questions. The party believes such an undertaking would fail to address the genuine concerns of the Togolese populace regarding democracy and effective governance. Instead, it suggests the true aim is to further entrench the existing political framework established by recent institutional reforms.

In its official communication, the political organization declared its refusal to engage in any process that resembles a “sham dialogue.” It urged all democratic forces, civil society organizations, and international partners of Togo to remain vigilant against any reform not born from extensive national consensus.

Furthermore, the ANC continues to express reservations about the nation’s current Constitution. The party contends that institutional changes implemented in recent years still provoke concerns regarding their legitimacy and their effectiveness in fulfilling the democratic aspirations of the citizens.

Through this public declaration, the opposition movement reaffirmed its steadfast belief that any significant constitutional reform must be preceded by an inclusive dialogue. This dialogue, they insist, must involve all political and social stakeholders across the country, a condition deemed essential to ensure the credibility and public acceptance of any forthcoming changes.

This decisive stance emerges amidst a national political landscape where institutional matters remain a central point of contention. As rumors intensify regarding another potential constitutional overhaul, the ANC aims to unequivocally distance itself and preempt any initiative it perceives as undermining the spirit of a truly consensual democratic process.
