Sonko threatens motion of no confidence against Senegal’s Al Aminou Lô government

The Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, delivered a stern warning to Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô during a public gathering in Touba on Sunday. In a move that underscores escalating political tensions, Sonko reiterated his readiness to deploy a constitutional motion of no confidence against the government if circumstances demand it.

As leader of the Pastef party, which commands a robust majority in the National Assembly, Sonko emphasized that the motion remains a viable tool at his disposal. He cautioned that while the opposition is prepared to act, the decision hinges on the government’s adherence to constitutional principles and accountability.

Sonko’s remarks come amid heightened political friction, particularly following the invalidation of the constitutional reform and his vocal criticism of President Diomaye Faye’s administration. The Speaker reassured the public that the motion would not be wielded to foment institutional chaos but rather to uphold governance standards.

In Touba, his tone reflected growing resolve, signaling that the government’s actions—or inactions—may soon face decisive scrutiny from the legislative body.
