Senegal’s political tensions: supporters of Sonko react to PM dismissal

The removal of Senegal’s Prime Minister has reignited political discussions in Dakar. Following the presidential announcement terminating Ousmane Sonko’s tenure, residents of the capital are grappling with mixed emotions—ranging from resignation to outright disappointment—after months of escalating tensions between the country’s two top leaders.

Divided reactions among Sonko’s base

Ibrahima Dione, a Dakar resident and staunch follower of Sonko, expressed cautious optimism. « Thankfully, this was expected. Ousmane Sonko has achieved more than any other minister in Senegal’s history. We will stand by him with even greater pride. Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s conduct has been far from mature, » he stated.

The dismissal of Sonko and his entire cabinet—announced abruptly—has left the Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité (PASTEF) with little immediate recourse beyond social media statements, underscoring the depth of the crisis at the heart of the government.

Modou Diaw, another Dakar resident, voiced concerns over the suddenness of the decision. « This shake-up is destabilizing. I was caught off guard by the announcement—it came out of nowhere. It’s not what the country needs right now. We need jobs, not political upheaval, » he shared.

From campaign promise to presidential dispute

Diomaye Faye’s rise to the presidency was fueled by Sonko’s immense popularity, particularly among Senegal’s youth. However, the Prime Minister’s controversial public statements and actions reportedly strained relations with the head of state, observers noted.

Thierno Sow, a resident of Dakar, took a more pragmatic stance. « Many Senegalese saw this coming. The president has the authority to appoint and dismiss officials. If it’s for the nation’s good, then it’s the right call, » he reasoned.

The PASTEF party had secured a landslide victory in the first round of the March 2024 elections, campaigning on promises of sweeping political reforms and accountability in public administration.
