Senegal’s jobs push: Sonko pledges thousands of new positions
The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, reaffirmed before lawmakers on Friday, May 22, 2026, the Government’s commitment to making employment the cornerstone of its economic and social agenda. Addressing the National Assembly during a session of topical questions, he outlined a bold strategy to tackle youth unemployment amid mounting public expectations.
« Employment is our absolute priority, and we will create thousands of jobs. I give you my solemn word as Prime Minister, » declared Sonko in front of parliamentarians. He emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader shift in Senegal’s economic priorities, with a strong focus on boosting the national private sector and reinforcing economic sovereignty.
While underscoring his determination, the Prime Minister acknowledged the need for economic pragmatism. « I cannot promise a job to everyone, but we will create thousands of opportunities for young people, » he clarified, stressing that the strategy will rely on coordinated efforts between the State, private enterprises, and economic partners.
During his address, Sonko also championed a more nationally oriented economic policy. His goal is to ensure greater participation of Senegalese citizens in productive sectors, without undermining cooperation with foreign investors. « We have placed national interests at the forefront, but this does not mean we will turn away from foreign partners. We are organizing our economy so that Senegalese stakeholders play a far more significant role, » he asserted.
A key highlight of the session was the announcement of a soon-to-be-introduced bill on economic patriotism. This legislation aims to anchor industrial and commercial activities locally, thereby strengthening the country’s economic sovereignty.
For Sonko, the success of this policy hinges on a more robust private sector, seen as a vital engine for growth and unemployment reduction. « A well-structured private sector must be supported by its government, » he concluded, urging collective mobilization to meet the pressing needs of Senegal’s youth.
