On a recent Saturday in Dakar, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye introduced a landmark political move by unveiling his new party, Kiiraay – Les Patriotes républicains, signaling a definitive split from his former mentor and ex-Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The party’s name, derived from the Wolof word for « protection » or « shield, » underscores its mission to safeguard national interests.

Before a crowd of hundreds of supporters, President Faye positioned Kiiraay as a movement rooted in « Republic, ethics, transparency, fraternity, and hard work, » boldly declaring it the country’s leading political force. Its rallying cry, « The Nation First, » reflects his ambition to consolidate power around his presidential agenda.

The establishment of Kiiraay follows months of escalating tensions between Faye and Sonko, once allies who jointly ascended to power under the Pastef banner. Differences over debt management and institutional reforms culminated in Sonko’s removal in May. Though still serving as National Assembly President and head of the dominant Pastef party in Parliament, Sonko’s influence is now challenged by Faye’s new political vehicle, setting the stage for intensified rivalry within Senegal’s highest echelons.
