The former President of Senegal, Macky Sall, currently residing in Morocco, will meet with his successor, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on July 17, 2026. This meeting, announced by Macky Sall on social media, is part of his campaign for the United Nations Secretary-General position. In a post, he expressed gratitude to President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for the appointment and thanked the Senegalese people for their support since he announced his candidacy.
Macky Sall wrote: “As part of the consultations and visits related to my candidacy for Secretary-General of the United Nations, I will travel to Senegal on Friday, July 17, 2026. I deeply thank His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for this meeting. I also express my profound gratitude to the people of Senegal for their unwavering support and encouragement since my candidacy was announced.”
The visit and the meeting between the two leaders have sparked reactions, particularly among the most vocal supporters of Ousmane Sonko’s Pastef party. Some critics argue that welcoming Macky Sall could be seen as endorsing pre-election violence and mismanagement of the country’s economic and financial resources.
It is worth noting that Macky Sall’s candidacy for the UN Secretary-General role has not been formally endorsed by Senegal but by Burundi. From 2012 to 2024, Macky Sall served as President of Senegal. Since leaving office and settling in Marrakech, he has been actively engaging with global leaders to build support for his UN leadership bid.
