The Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le travail, l’éthique et la fraternité (Pastef) is gearing up for its inaugural national elective congress, scheduled for June 6–7, 2026 in Dakar. The landmark event will focus on electing the party’s president and charting its political course for the coming years, with the 2027 local and 2029 presidential elections looming on the horizon.
The congress’s outcome is already largely predictable: Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has been declared the sole candidate for the party leadership. The Haute autorité de régulation du parti (HARP) confirmed his candidacy following the submission deadline of May 20, while rejecting the applications of seven other hopefuls. Reasons for rejection included incomplete documentation—missing identification or membership cards—and procedural irregularities that could not be rectified after the deadline.
Under Sonko’s leadership, the party is expected to finalize its strategic priorities for the next electoral cycles. The congress will not only solidify his position but also serve as a platform to define the political and governance agenda for Senegal in the lead-up to pivotal votes.
