Senegal: Ousmane Sonko retains National Assembly leadership after constitutional ruling

The Constitutional Council of Senegal has definitively upheld Ousmane Sonko’s presidency of the National Assembly, dismissing the opposition’s legal challenge on grounds of lack of jurisdiction. The ruling closes the door on further appeals and secures his position at the helm of the legislative body.
Sonko, who was dismissed as Prime Minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in late May, quickly returned to his parliamentary seat before being elected Assembly President. This judicial endorsement strengthens his political standing and reshapes the balance of power within Senegal’s government.
The once-close alliance between Sonko and President Faye has fractured, exposing sharp disagreements over economic policy and public finance management. This judicial decision marks the beginning of a new chapter in Senegal’s political landscape.
