Senegal faces political uncertainty following Ousmane Sonko’s election as Assembly president

Ousmane Sonko, Senegal’s newly elected Assembly president, dismissed concerns over his political future this week, declaring that a dismissal does not equate to political disgrace. Within just four days of leaving his post as Prime Minister, he re-emerged as a dominant force in the legislative branch.
In a conciliatory speech aimed at the executive branch, Sonko emphasized there would be no obstruction, personal vendettas, or institutional chaos. Instead, he promised strict oversight of government actions and the full use of his oversight powers in case of disagreements.
A historic power-sharing arrangement
Political analyst Ellimane Haby Kane of Legs Africa describes this cohabitation as unprecedented. While Sonko’s tone appears measured, analysts believe his real goal is to exert greater control over the executive branch. The analyst points to Sonko’s public criticism of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s failure to consult the Pastef party on key appointments, including the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers.
The power struggle is far from over. As early as Tuesday evening, a statement from the Pastef party revealed that the presidency had reached out to party members regarding government formation—only to set conditions for their participation.
