Senegal opposition party calls for legal action after sonko ruling

The opposition party Jëf-Jël, led by Talla Sylla, has responded to the Constitutional Council’s recent decision regarding the case of Ousmane Sonko, urging parliamentary members who filed the appeal to take immediate legal action.

The Council’s ruling, issued on June 17, 2026, declared itself incompetent to review the decision made by the National Assembly Bureau on May 24, 2026, which reinstated Ousmane Sonko as a deputy. While acknowledging the Court’s authority, the party emphasized that this ruling does not equate to a validation of the contested decision.

Jëf-Jël clarified its position in a formal statement, stressing three critical points:

1. A ruling of incompetence ≠ constitutional approval

The party highlighted that the Constitutional Council’s decision to declare itself unable to rule on the matter does not confer legitimacy upon the National Assembly’s action. Legal experts have noted that the Court avoided addressing the core constitutional questions surrounding the eligibility and conditions of the parliamentary mandate.

2. A clear path to administrative justice

The Council’s decision carries significant legal implications. By classifying the National Assembly Bureau’s action as an administrative act—one that does not directly pertain to electoral processes—the Court has effectively directed the opposition to pursue a Recours pour Excès de Pouvoir (Abuse of Power Appeal) before the Supreme Court’s Administrative Chamber.

3. The call for relentless legal pursuit

Jëf-Jël has urged the deputies who initiated the appeal not to abandon their efforts, emphasizing that the fight for justice must continue within the framework of the law. The party condemned any move toward political disengagement or alternative strategies, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law. It has pledged to stand firm alongside all democrats opposed to institutional overreach, vowing to remain vigilant in defending the integrity of the National Assembly.

The statement concluded with a resolute declaration: “The battle for the Republic is a legal and political marathon.”
