Heightened Coastal Alert in Senegal Due to Dangerous Swell
The National Agency of Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM) has issued a warning about hazardous sea conditions, including strong swells and winds, affecting Senegal’s coastline. Mariners and coastal communities are urged to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to safety guidelines until May 16.
The National Agency of Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM) has raised the alarm about severe sea conditions expected along parts of Senegal’s coastline in the coming days.
According to the agency, a northwest swell exceeding 2.5 meters is forecasted to impact the Grande Côte starting Tuesday, May 12, at 3:00 AM. The conditions will then extend to Dakar by Wednesday, May 13, at 1:00 AM, persisting until Saturday, May 16, at 1:00 AM.
Meteorological Outlook for Senegal’s Coastline
In addition to the hazardous swell, strong northerly winds are expected to batter the Grande Côte from Monday, May 11, at 11:00 PM through Wednesday, May 13, at 7:00 AM. Wind gusts may reach up to 40 km/h, compounding the risks for maritime activities.
The agency has highlighted several potential impacts, including:
- Rough seas making navigation and fishing operations difficult
- Dangerous waves along the coastline
- Increased vulnerability for small boats and fishing vessels
ANACIM strongly advises fishermen, mariners, and coastal residents to prioritize safety, avoid unnecessary sea travel, and follow all issued warnings without exception.
