Sénégal: Diomaye Faye forms new political party amid debt crisis

The political landscape in Sénégal has been reshaped as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially launched his own political party, marking the end of his alliance with former ally Ousmane Sonko, leader of the ruling Pastef party.

Breaking away from the party that propelled him to power in 2024, Faye has established the Parti des Patriotes Républicains, signaling a clear shift in Senegal’s governance and power dynamics. The move comes as the country grapples with a severe debt crisis, intensifying the political stakes.

Defection and growing dissent within Pastef

In the weeks leading up to the party’s launch, a wave of resignations swept through the Pastef. Regional leaders and youth activists, among others, abandoned the party to join Faye’s new movement. Even members of the opposition Alliance pour la République have crossed over, strengthening Faye’s political base.

The rift between Faye and Sonko deepened over fundamental disagreements on key policy decisions, particularly regarding negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a loan program. These tensions culminated in a definitive split, exposing the fractures within Senegal’s leadership.

Faye and Sonko rose to power together under the Pastef banner, which stands for Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail, l’Éthique et la Fraternité. Their partnership, forged during the 2024 presidential election, has now dissolved, leaving a power vacuum that Faye aims to fill with his new party.

With the 2027 local elections and the 2029 presidential campaign on the horizon, this political realignment sets the stage for a fierce electoral battle. Faye’s move could redefine Senegal’s political future, particularly as economic challenges and debt negotiations dominate the national agenda.
