Senegal assembly head backs constitutional court ruling on reform law

In a decisive move, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, has acknowledged the constitutional court’s verdict striking down the lawmakers’ constitutional reform bill. The leader of the Pastef party accepted the decision rendered by the body known as the « Seven Sages », asserting that it must be respected by all.

« Regardless of the reactions or opinions such a ruling may provoke, one fact remains clear: this decision applies to everyone. Case closed! » Sonko declared in an official statement.

The Speaker emphasized that this moment highlights the importance of institutional roles. « When institutions fulfill their duties within their designated authority, no crisis can arise, » he noted.

Reaffirming the National Assembly’s commitment to its mandate, Sonko added, « The Assembly will continue to carry out its duties unreservedly. Laws will be passed or rejected in service of the people—honoring our promises to this resilient and honorable nation. »
