Political repression in Chad after GCAP leaders sentenced

In a sharp escalation of political tensions, the opposition party Les Patriotes has vehemently condemned what it describes as a politically motivated judicial crackdown in Chad. The controversy follows the sentencing of eight prominent leaders of the GCAP (Gathering of Political Actors) to eight years in prison on charges widely seen as fabricated.

The declaration came during a press conference held on May 13, 2026, at the party’s headquarters in N’Djaména. Hisseine Abdoulaye, spokesperson for Les Patriotes, described Chad as mired in a deepening crisis, citing escalating insecurity, deepening ethnic tensions, and a severe erosion of civil liberties. The party warned that the country is teetering on the brink of further instability unless urgent action is taken.

Combined crises fuel instability

The party highlighted multiple layers of crisis gripping the nation. In the Lake Chad basin, Boko Haram attacks against Chadian forces have intensified, while intercommunal violence in the east—particularly in the Wadi Fira region—has claimed dozens of lives. These developments, according to Les Patriotes, expose critical vulnerabilities in the national security apparatus and deepen public anxiety.

The political climate has also deteriorated sharply. The party condemned what it calls an authoritarian clampdown under the current administration, pointing to the assassination of activist Yaya Dillo, the imprisonment of opposition figure Succès Masra, and most recently, the swift and highly controversial sentencing of the eight GCAP leaders.

Justice or political weapon?

Les Patriotes alleged that the judicial process against the GCAP leaders was expedited and manipulated to silence dissent. They accused the Attorney General, the Ministry of Territorial Administration, and the Supreme Court of colluding to dismantle the coalition through legal means. The party rejected the charges—including illegal assembly, conspiracy, rebellion, and unlawful arms possession—as baseless and politically motivated, insisting there was no credible evidence to support them.

In a bold call to action, the party urged the international community, human rights organizations, and defenders of the rule of law to intervene immediately. They demanded the unconditional release of all eight leaders and other political prisoners, warning that continued detention would only escalate tensions and undermine democratic progress in the country.

In closing, Les Patriotes issued an urgent appeal to citizens to stand united against repression, defend democratic values, and work toward national reconciliation to prevent further descent into chaos.
